How to Avoid and Trick Keyloggers on Public Computers

Whenever you use a public computer like one in a library, office, or even at a coffee shop assume that the computer is full of keyloggers. A keylogger is a software program that can detect all the keystrokes, read what is copied and pasted, can detect mouse movement, and can even now take screenshots of the computer. The purpose of them is to steal account information. If you use a public computer your login and password is most likely not safe because of keyloggers. You have to avoid keyloggers and use some tricks to get around them. The first trick is to never type in your whole user name and password all at once. For example, type the first two characters of your password, then go somewhere else on the screen and type a few characters. Go back and forth like this so the keylogger gets a confusing string of information for your password. Another technique is to bring a USB with a java based on screen keyboard. There are many of these in paid and free versions. While some debate if they are completely secure, you can use this java keyboard to add some of the keystrokes from the keyboard as well. Some of your keystrokes come from the keyboard but some will also come from clicking on the on screen keyboard making it difficult for someone to decipher. The last technique is that after logging into a public computer is to immediately change your password once you get home. If these password tricks did not work at all, your password is now changed and safe. Regardless of what you do, it's a good idea to regularly change these passwords at least every few months without question for increased security. While these steps might seem like a lot of work, it's important to keep your information safe from those who write malicious software in attempts of getting it.
