How to Speed Up My Computer - Tricks of the Trade

If you're asking how to speed up my computer, you are definitely among the majority of computer users wanting to know the exact same thing. Personal computers, while one of the most useful and powerful technological tools to come along in the last 100 years, are not totally perfect devices. Like most complex products, they can be prone to problems that interfere with their operation. The good news is that by putting a little effort into learning more about the inner workings of your PC, you can recover some of that lost performance. When the question how to speed up my computer is asked, it's best to consider the most obvious things that could be behind the problem. One of the most common is running multiple programs simultaneously. Many PC users prefer having all the applications they use during the day open at the same time. They will even set up their computer to launch all those programs whenever they first boot up. What many users don't realize is this just makes your PC work harder than it really has to. The CPU, or "brain" of your computer, has to be constantly accessing these open applications. That can slow down the application you're using at the time and give you less than optimum performance. It's a no-brainer: Close infrequently used applications so your PC can give its full attention to the program you're working on. You can get an answer to your question "How to speed up my computer?" when you use PC diagnostic software. This particular kind of software is designed specifically to look at the many different systems on your PC for anything that might be hampering its performance. The software will evaluate your system and make recommendations for correcting any problems it detects. You can then tell the software to make the fixes it suggests and recover lost performance. Speeding up your PC is something everyone strives for. You can see significant performance increases with just a little simple maintenance that eliminates unneeded data that's crowding your registry or other corners of your hard drive. And you can use your diagnostic software to provide you with a snapshot of how well your PC is performing and offer suggestions for improvement. You'll enjoy your PC even more when your systems are all in sync with one another and those annoying system crashes are a thing of the past. A Look at the Different Skills and Professions Involved in Game Design

The computer games industry is booming. Even when it seems as if every other industry is either in recession or crashing altogether there are more video games being sold than ever before. The big blockbuster games that come out can expect to make a lot more money than even the biggest Hollywood blockbusters. So as game sales go through the roof game design becomes an ever more in demand profession. It is diverse as well, there are as many different types of profession in a game design studio as there are in a movie studio (and without the medieval hierarchy, I'm talking to you Christian Bale). And unlike the movie business there aren't the same economies of scale that mean movie production outside of Hollywood are disproportionately expensive. There are game design studios around the world producing high quality games with production values as high as any in Silicon Valley. At the core of video game design is programming. Very often a game design studio will license established software such as game engines, physics engines or artificial intelligence code from what are called 'middleware' developers. This is because it can be a laborious task to produce this kind of comprehensive software from scratch. It's a bit like the car industry. Many different brands of cars with different designs will have the engines from the same few companies like Volkswagen or Ford. These middleware companies are often substantial companies in their own right and need a full studios worth of coders, programmers and designers. Many of these companies produce fully fledged games to exhibit their technology. Id games are probably the most famous of these. Their Quake and Doom engines were successful games in their own right but much of the companies profits would have come from licensing their engine technology to smaller game design studios. Still, even in these game design studios they still need programmers. The code of the engine needs to be altered to fit the purpose of the specific game and to work with any other software like, physics engines or artificial intelligence, that the game design studio may have licensed or even produced themselves. When all the engines have been built and the game code fully developed the physical appearance of the game needs to be created (of course, the programming and art are worked on at the same time but the art depends on the engine and not the other way round). At the beginning of a project traditional style artists and graphic designers will produce what is called concept art. These are created to establish the style, tone and overall look of the game. There might be many designs put forward before a final decision is made on the appearance of various characters and environments. They still may change in the course of the production but they give 3D modellers and animators somewhere to start from. Modellers produce 3 dimensional versions of the characters that will appear in the game and map or level designers create 3D versions of the environments in which the game will take place. In 2D games such as platformers there will still be level designers but they will work with different game design software. 2D characters are called sprites and still need to be animated but the process is a little simpler and more akin to traditional cartoon style animation. Outside of the actual design of the workings and look of the game there are other roles in game design. Writers are needed to develop the plot and narrative of games as well as dialogue. Sound engineers are needed to create and design sound effects and soundtracks for the game.

How to Avoid and Trick Keyloggers on Public Computers

Whenever you use a public computer like one in a library, office, or even at a coffee shop assume that the computer is full of keyloggers. A keylogger is a software program that can detect all the keystrokes, read what is copied and pasted, can detect mouse movement, and can even now take screenshots of the computer. The purpose of them is to steal account information. If you use a public computer your login and password is most likely not safe because of keyloggers. You have to avoid keyloggers and use some tricks to get around them. The first trick is to never type in your whole user name and password all at once. For example, type the first two characters of your password, then go somewhere else on the screen and type a few characters. Go back and forth like this so the keylogger gets a confusing string of information for your password. Another technique is to bring a USB with a java based on screen keyboard. There are many of these in paid and free versions. While some debate if they are completely secure, you can use this java keyboard to add some of the keystrokes from the keyboard as well. Some of your keystrokes come from the keyboard but some will also come from clicking on the on screen keyboard making it difficult for someone to decipher. The last technique is that after logging into a public computer is to immediately change your password once you get home. If these password tricks did not work at all, your password is now changed and safe. Regardless of what you do, it's a good idea to regularly change these passwords at least every few months without question for increased security. While these steps might seem like a lot of work, it's important to keep your information safe from those who write malicious software in attempts of getting it.

The Road to Censorship Through SOPA and PIPA

The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) were proposed because of music and film and other creative industries trying to protect their arts by copyright laws. The act of stealing or illegally selling copyright material happens all over the world by rogue websites, especially sites that are operated and registered overseas. What is being debated and what the public at large is terrified of is the vagueness of the bills. Because both of the bills in their definitions could bleed into other areas, many are afraid that its reach could affect all of us and our Freedom of Speech here in America. Imagine getting on your computer and typing in "Google" and nothing comes up. Then you type in "Facebook" and again, nada. Well, if these bills pass in Congress that is exactly what could happen. These laws will affect companies, websites, blogs, jobs and the list goes on and on. If this causes a change in your pulse rate, then you are not alone. It is a very scary reality. We can actually see how internet censorship works through the eyes of people in China. The China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, or MIIT, blocks Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube (to name a few)and specific keywords from being searched. The MIIT has blocked information from the internet for years in China and in essence are trying to prevent its people from accessing specific and true facts about their government and its history. Yes, there are ways around finding censored information, but the Chinese government is constantly working to make access more difficult. You may not know this, but there is information that has been blocked here in the US through websites and software companies that we know and use every day; Google, Yahoo, Bing, Microsoft and yes, even Apple. In order to continue doing business with China and stay in their good graces, businesses here in the states have answered to Chinese demands to censor certain information. In January of 2011, Google claimed that there was an attempt of China accessing information of some of their Gmail accounts and announced that they would no longer be censoring Google.cn. This obviously caused a hit for Google in China, but they are not backing down. What internet giants are trying to show us on "Black Wednesday" is that if the SOPA and PIPA bills pass in Congress, the way we experience the internet will be change dramatically. Most of us cannot, and should not, picture a world with this type of censorship. Yes, stealing copyright information is wrong and needs to be addressed and stopped. There are other ways that the arts and copyrights can be protected and this is where Congresses focus needs to be channeled. We, in the United States, take some of our freedoms for granted every day, but as Americans we need to stand up and fight for our unalienable rights under the Constitution, or we can start to kiss more and more of our freedoms goodbye.

How to Speed Up My Computer, Tips and Tricks to To Speed Up Your Computer Performance

Over time all the computers tends to slow down and this leads us to buy new hardware equipments to maintain the current speed flow and performance of the machine. These upgrades over time can turn to be very expensive and this is why I want to share with you guys some of ways that you can speed up your computer performance with a fractions of the price. So are you ready? First of all let me tell you why your computer is slowing down, I think this very important to know the reason behind the slow downs. You see over time your machine gets saturated with useless data, what I mean is that your computer is getting cluttered with garbage. What do I mean by garbage? Well, every time you install and uninstall any programs there will be always files left behind, mainly registry files. And these files will get cluttered over time. This is the main cause of the problem so to fix it you must remove the entire "garbage" registry left over files. To do that you must use a Registry Cleaner software program, these kinds of programs will search and remove all the invalid, corrupted and left over registry files. For more information about registry cleaners I strongly suggest visiting the link below. Another way to speed up your machine is to remove the startup programs that you do not use often. To do this just go to home -> run and type "msconfig" and under the startup tab uncheck all the startup programs that you do not use often (restarting system may be required). By removing these startup programs you can free your computers memory by 30%. A good way to use computer memory is to perform a disk defragmenter, this will organise your computer files and folder making it very easy to the machine to find the proper information. By doing this you will increase your computer speed by 20%.
Smit Chacha is a computer expert with over 8 years in the industry. He has an intimate knowledge of the windows registry and various register repair software. After testing some of the top registry cleaners on the marker he has created a comprehensive review site that details his findings. Why Backup to the Cloud?

For businesses and home users backing up to the cloud can make the backup procedure very simple and extremely safe. Many businesses and most home users fail to adequately backup their computer systems in any way. This is inviting disaster as it is almost inevitable that at some point in time a hard disk or component is going to fail risking the loss of the data. If you are in business and failing to back up your computer and critical files on a regular basis, you are playing with fire, as even very small unusual accidents like coffee tipped into a computer, a virus or Trojan horse or simple electrical fires or spikes could cost your business thousands and thousands without proper data backup. If you're a home computer user and have stored thousands of photographs and videos or music tracks on your computer and this is stolen or damaged accidentally, you could have lost many years of memories that are completely irreplaceable. Backing up to the cloud gives you a totally secure and unbreakable system that allows you to back up your data to a new computer, even if you're damaged or stolen system is completely irretrievable. Backing up your data is a habit the vast majority of computer users have not successfully mastered and with cloud computing it is both simple and efficient and very safe. Backing up to tape or a removable hard disk is better than nothing but these items are invariably left either in the same location or directly next to the computer that has been backed up. Backing up to the cloud offers you many advantages over some of the established backup procedures. These include;
  • It's very easy to do.
  • It's very quick.
  • It's very cheap.
  • It's very safe.
Backing up to the cloud is very easy to do because providers of the backup software use simple backup programs that will automatically backup either on demand or at a predetermined time of day. This takes the remembering to backup part of the process out of the equation. In effect means your backup procedures are fully automated and thus more likely to be done. Backing up automatically is very quick as the system generally will only backup new documents or modifications to existing documents. With the continuing fall in the price of hard disks, and their ability to store ever more data the price of cloud storage has reached a point where it is so cost-effective to back up using this technology, the risk of not using it is outweighed considerably. Most commercial online backup companies are using military grade security technology, to ensure your backups are kept secure and also the traffic adding data to your backup is kept private. When you have backed up or stored data in the cloud it is usually available on any computer using a browser which can be extremely convenient if you are travelling or just using a computer in a different site.
John Mills is a regular commentator on computing subjects, companies and websites specialising in online applications. Best Cloud Storage Has a full range of Cloud Storage reviews for people looking for an off site backup solution.

An MP3 Download Trick that Works

You signed up for a teleseminar and ended up missing it. Dang! But the hosts recorded it. Yah! They sent you an email message that says "Go here now and listen to the call in its entirety. BUT the web link in the email message points direct to the MP3 file and your browser's protesting. Dang again. The message you've received looks something like... "You can download and listen to the call to find out our exact secrets. Go here now: [http://www.some-guru-site.com/teleseminar-recording.htm]" Have you ever attempted to use the "right-click / save as" convention on a link in an email message? It just don't work. Why do marketers do this? Are they trying to make it difficult to download and pass an MP3 file around? Did they just have a lazy attack? It doesn't matter why because you can get around this nuisance. It's really easy. Do this: (1) Open a new blank web page document using your favorite HTML editor. (2) Go back to the email message and copy the web link that points to the MP3 file. (3) Flip back over to your HTML editor, paste the link into the source code of your blank web page document and format it properly as you would any other target URL. Following this procedure, your link will have a formatting something like this (Note - the beginning and ending anchor tags here have an extra "."): http://www.some-guru-site.com/teleseminar-recording.htm (4) Now, still in your HTML editor, go to "Preview" mode. Your link is fully functional and now you can use the conventional "Right-Click / Save As" function to start the file download just as if the teleseminar host had sent you to a download page online. That's it. That's all there is to our little MP3 file download trick. Save this article in your "sneaky computer tricks" file and next time you find yourself fighting with your web browser to access an MP3 audio file, it works slick as a snail trail. Understand Computer Virus - Prevent Against Virus Attack

Virus is the worst of malwares (rogue programs) that causes serious havoc to your computer system. A virus is self-replicating and affects computer hardware, software, and even the Operating System. Viruses are designed to replicate themselves and to elude detection from anti-virus software, so without a good antivirus software it might be impossible to dig them out of your computer system. Computer virus is an executable program written with the intention of causing a wreck to your computer or network, and because viruses are programs, they are loaded into computer memory, executed and instruct the computer to perform the actions dictated by the virus. A virus can instruct infected computer to re-write the virus onto other computers in the network thereby spreading the virus from one computer to the next. A virus payload may also delete files from hard drive, write itself to another program, or even spread across the internet through file attachments. Virus may fall into one of these categories; 1) Parasitic - infects executable files or programs in the computer 2) Bootstrap sector - infect the boot sector of the hard disk where OS start-up files are stored on the first partition. 3) Data file - These types of viruses can open, manipulate and close data files, and are usually written in macro language. They mostly affect Microsoft Office Word document 4) Companion - this type of virus creates a program with same name as another program that already exist on the computer, tricking the computer to run the rogue program instead of the real program. Protect yourself by backing up your computer regularly so that in case there is an infection you can restore your system from the back up. It is also important you have very reliable anti-virus software on your machine. Good anti-virus must self-updates its database from time to time so that it can prevent you from a new attack.

Whats the Best Email Service for Business?

The best email service for business should be paid solutions, in my opinion. Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo, just to mention a few, are free email service providers available today on the internet for use. If you are thinking of using these free solutions, then you should reconsider. These solutions will definitely work for the small businesses, or companies that have up to ten employees. These free solutions are not intended for large organizations. Large organizations should consider having their own services in-house. Even though Gmail is a free email service provider, it is considered by industry professionals as the premier free service on the Internet. Popular search engine Google owns Gmail, and as a result it can be considered one of the more robust free email systems available today. People searching for free email services are attracted to Gmail because of it almost unlimited storage space. Gmail can also be considered a provider that keeps up with the changing times, by incorporating popular social media awareness into their product. Any company that uses free solutions to service their email business requirements will definitely be at the mercy of these free providers that are hosting their email services. They will definitely be at a disadvantage, in relation to security. One of the many disadvantages of using these free companies to provide email services is that your deleted emails can never be recovered. Paid solutions offer many redundancies, like backup and restore of deleted items. Why would any serious company trust an important part of their business like email to free solutions? In my opinion, it is because they are not informed of the many options that are currently available to their companies, in relation to email. To setup a solid mail infrastructure for business, many hours of planning should be done before making a decision on what platform to use. If no Information Technology professionals are available in-house, then the company should seek assistance from trained consultants, depending on what funds are available to invest. Information Technology Consultants can be very expensive. The best solution for any company for their email service would be to install an email Server using their very own infrastructure. One popular solution developed by a reputable company would be to use software called Exchange Server. Exchange Server is a product developed with the business owner in mind. It does not matter whether a company has ten employees, ten thousand employees. This solution will work for both size organizations. The only problems that may be experiences may be the lack of trained industry professionals to support the product in-house. Support of the product would not be considered a problem for most companies. The majority of large businesses would have an Information Technology teams in-house, to assist with critical issues that may arise. Email is such a critical and integral part of any business. Free service would work for a company that cannot afford an expensive network for their emails. Complete ownership of your email service is really the best way to go.

Computer Designs - How Will Your Future Computer Look?

Computers have been an essential part of our life. Almost each man on this earth directly or indirectly has been affected or benefited by computers. Computers have been such a part of our life that we cant spend a day without using a computer directly or indirectly. Starting from the very early days, computers have changed a lot. Vacuum tubes were used in the computers instead of today's transistors. The computers were too bulky and hard to operate. Taking example of ENIAC, world's first general purpose electronic computer, was weighted more than 27 tons. It used more than 17,000 vacuum tubes and more than 7,000 crystal diodes. It used 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and 1,500 relays. It had around 5 million hand soldered joints. It was roughly 8x3x100 feet in size and consumed 150 kW of power. But today's computers are more small in size and consume less power. The phenomenon of portable computing is getting very popular now a days. Companies are launching many new portable computers which are small in size, light in weight and have very exciting designs too. Mini Laptops and tablet computers have become very popular because of their exciting design and portability of use. Talking about future computers, companies are making many unique and purposeful designs. They are making computers smaller and smaller but yet very powerful device. The companies are making computers stylish in such a way that the computers have become a fashion now a day. Lenovo pocket yoga is a very stylish looking netbook. It looks like as if it is specially designed to fit in the pocket. You can flip its display in such a way that you can use it as a tablet with its touch sensible display. The keyboard is specially designed for ease of use for the users. It's another new feature is its belt which can be turned into a mouse. Hewlett Packard(HP) has also introduced its new concept designs. These designs are very special purpose designs. One of them is HP Eco. HP eco is designed for echo issued persons. It contains a barcode reader and solar charge cells. It also contains a special purpose bracelet which can measure blood pressure and pulse rate of the user. Another design of HP is HP Make-Up. Slow Computer? A Simple Trick Computer Technicians Use to Boost Computer Speed & Reliability

Computers are great when they run quickly & smoothly, but as soon as they run slow, they quickly become extremely annoying and frustrating to use. Millions of people have to put up with using slow computers every day, and if you're one of them, the good news is that there is a simple trick computer technicians use to help boost the speed of any Windows system in just a few minutes. Here's what you need to do... The way to boost the speed of your PC is to fix the problems that cause it to run slowly. There are a variety of issues which can cause a computer to slow down, but there's one that causes Windows to take longer to open up your programs & your system. The most common reason why your PC is running slow is that the 'registry' database is continually being corrupted and damaged. This database is one of the most important parts of your system, and is actually the most likely reason why your PC is running slow. The trick that many computer technicians use to boost the speed of slow computers is to "clean out" the registry database and make Windows able to read it a lot easier. The registry is basically a central database inside Windows, which stores a lot of important files & information your system needs to run. Everything from your desktop wallpaper to your Internet favorites are kept in this database, making it one of the most vital parts of all Windows systems. It's best to think of the registry as like a "telephone directory" for your PC - storing important settings that your computer can look up at any time. The big problem with the registry database is that it contains so much valuable information that Windows is continually saving many of its listings in the wrong way, making them extremely difficult to read. This is like taking the telephone directory and mixing all the pages up - leading Windows to take longer to read the settings it requires to run, slowing it down and causing a lot of problems on your system. Not many people even know the registry exists inside Windows, but it's one of the most important parts of your PC which needs to be kept in top condition. The good news is that you can now fix the registry, like the computer pros, and make your PC run extremely fast again. There are effective software programs called "registry cleaners" which have been designed to repair the errors inside the registry, allowing your computer to run much faster and without many errors. Many computer tech's use registry cleaner programs to scan through slow PCs and repair the errors that could be causing them to run slow.
You can boost computer speed by using a registry cleaner tool to fix the various errors that are causing issues inside it. You can Click Here to fix the registry and make it run as fast as it did when it was new.

Can You Make Your Computer Run Faster Than the Speed of Light? A Secret Trick That Works

Computers that run slow are not only annoying, but can cause many problems with work & your games. Fortunately, a new trick has been developed which can make your computer run extremely fast. This trick is based on fixing one of the parts of your computer which Windows depends on to help it run, making it vital that you're able to keep it in top working order. I am, of course, talking about the "registry", and this tutorial is going to show you how you can use the registry to make your PC run faster than it did when it was new. Here's how... The registry is a database inside Windows which stores all the settings, options and system files that your PC requires to run. This part of your computer is not very well known, but is actually one of the most important components of any Windows system. It's best to describe it as being like a central library of information that Windows uses every day. Each time you load up your PC, it needs to read 100's of registry files in order to help it run as smoothly and reliably as possible - but the big problem is that many of these files actually become damaged & corrupted, leading your system to take much longer to process the files it requires to run. One of the big issues with the registry is that it's continually being over-used by your computer, which leads your PC to run much slower... and to speed it up, you need to ensure that the registry is not only fixed, but is also 100% repaired back to the way it was when it was new. As many registry files get damaged, it's like taking the books in the library and mixing the pages round in all of them. As you can imagine, this problem causes Windows to run extremely slowly, and is the primary cause of computers' slower speed as they age. In order to make sure that Windows can run faster, the trick is to clean out the registry database and make sure all the files it has are in the right place & are intact. The way to do this is to use a "registry repair tool" - a software program which has been designed to fix the problems that often caused Windows PCs to run slow. To use one of these tools, you should basically download one onto your system and then let it repair the various issues that your system has - boosting its speed in the process.
You can make your PC run faster by using a 'registry cleaner' to repair any of the damaged / corrupted settings that are causing it to run slow. You can Click Here to make Windows run extremely fast.

Slow PC speed can be a source of frustration for regular internet users. This is a problem most users will encounter sooner or later. But the good news is that you can address this problem. You can speed up your computer through tips and tricks that are not hard to understand or implement. Some are very basic, but many fail to use them merely because they are ignorant that such actions are possible. But this is exactly the reason for this article, to share tips on how to make your PC work at optimum level without having to resort to adding more hardware. As they say the best cure is precaution, this is also true in downloading files and programs from the internet. If you are downloading free programs from the web, be sure to read the fine print because many free downloadable programs come with spyware which will significantly slow down your internet speed and cause you great frustration. If you think that you have already been infected by such spyware, you can download spyware removal programs. A spyware removal program will search your computer for any existing spyware and remove it from your computer. Another trick to speed up your computer is to alter your start up configuration. When you open your computer, many programs automatically open as you start up. This can eat up memory and space making your PC slower. All you have to do is to click the start menu, and choose run. Type in the space provided "msconfig." This will lead you to choose which programs should start when you start up. Leave necessary programs such as anti-virus programs which you need. Doing this simple action will make your PC work faster. If you are a regular internet user like most people, you visit hundreds of sites a day. These visits create logs and temporary files which take up space in your computer. All you have to do is to clear your internet cache every day. You can do this through two steps. One option is to go to Control Panel and choose Internet Options. In the temporary files category, choose delete files. Another way is through your browser. Click on the Tools on the File menu and the same box will appear. Clear your temporary files by clicking delete files. You can also delete offline content. Be careful in deleting cookies because you might erase important data in the process. It is also recommended to set your internet history to only 2-3 days. All these tips are just simple actions you can do so your pc will run on optimum speed. With these tricks, you will have a more happy and enjoyable PC experience. iPad And iPhone Apps - The Similarities And Differences

People who design an iPhone app know the similarities and differences between the iPhone and the iPad and their impact on the apps used in these two very popular and smart devices. When the iPad was first introduced to the market, Apple let people know that their iPhone apps can perfectly be used in iPads and it was true. However, as time passed and new apps were created and used, more and more of those applications became exclusive to one or the other of the devices. First let us look at the similarities and differences between the iPhone and the iPad and how they affect the design of iPhone apps. The iPhone is used to make phone calls or video calls on some models, send text and email messages, read books on it, play music and videos, surf the Internet and take photos. The iPad is used mainly for browsing online, reading books, and playing multimedia files. So basically, the iPad can do all the things that the iPhone does except make calls and send text messages. However, some iPad apps do allow us to send texts. So what are their differences? The iPad is a much larger device and has a bigger touchscreen than the iPhone. Because of its smaller size, the iPhone is primarily used to make phone calls. On the other hand the iPad serves as a PC or notebook. The docking device of one of the models has a physical keyboard which when attached to the tablet, converts it into a laptop or notebook. Very cool! If you want to create an app for the two devices the difference in size is a key factor. Today, you don't want to use an app you're using in your iPhone in your iPad or vice versa. It may work, but not as perfectly as in the device it was originally created for. The people who create iPad apps have taken advantage of the larger touchscreen of the tablet. iPad apps when downloaded on the iPhone do not look as great. The 'shrinking' of the app renders it unreadable. The reverse is true of the iPhone app. However, the pictures and text of the magazine and newspaper apps won't fit on the smaller touchscreen of the iPhone. And the iPhone apps downloaded on the iPad device, suffer a loss of quality. The graphics are enlarged and they become pixellated and blurry. To fix these issues, some people who design iPhone apps have created two versions for the devices. All the user has to do is to download the correct one on his device and enjoy its graphics and functionality.

Designing A Popular iPhone App - Some Pitfalls To Avoid

In today's mobile world nothing comes close to capturing the popularity of Apple's iPhone. One of the most popular features of this unique device is the third-party applications for it. They prove that anyone with the technical know-how can design an iPhone app. One is only limited by the imagination when it comes to designing one of these programs, but that does not mean that it will be marketable. The only way to profit from these applications is to make them worth while to a targeted group of people, or satisfy an unmet need. Such a thing is not easy to accomplish as it requires some market research to know what people are looking for and what they need. Some of the most popular iPhone applications either meet a need such as directions to a destination, up to date financial news, or provide some other valuable service. These are the apps that people purchase. Or they are incredibly fun to use and are of the gaming variety. Designing an iPhone app that delivers a gaming experience is a bit risky because of copyright issues. A designer really needs to be careful. If one does not create a game that is unique then they could be infringing on someone else's idea. If it is a big budget project then the patenting of the idea and involvement of intellectual property attorneys will probably be necessary. There is nothing more frustrating than investing a lot of time and money into a project only to find out that it is not marketable. So when someone wants to design an iPhone app it is a good idea to look at what people need in their day-to-day lives. Of course there is a need to look at each group of people differently. Never try to cater to the needs of too many groups of people. Loyal consumers are far more desirable. Creating a whole series of applications should be the goal of any business that is looking to cash in on the app craze. It takes a lot more than a basic idea or vision to design an iPhone app that is truly worth while. The technical know-how of talented programmers and designers can be costly. However, certain aspects of the programming of an app project can be outsourced to freelancers, but this can be risky. There are a lot of freelancers who take advantage of upfront payments and busy bosses. The road to designing and marketing a product that sells well is a long one indeed, but the potential benefits are absolutely huge. You stand to make tons of money. It just depends on your vision and the willingness to follow through on it.

Hard Drive Freezer Trick

As an experienced professional in the IT industry, I will tell you that the hard drive freezer trick is not a myth. I was actually surprised to see how many articles and forum posts there are online that claim that freezing a drive in attempt to recover data never works. This trick involves some luck, but you must also be sure to do it correctly. Don't expect this to be a permanent fix, because it isn't. Also, don't expect this to work with a bad drive every time. What you can expect from this trick is to possibly get your drive to spin up long enough for you to copy over important files to a different device. While the hard drive freezer trick can possibly do more harm than good to the drive, there is a chance that the cooler temperature will allow it to function for a short period of time. Again, this could actually damage the drive even more and make it harder to recover data using other methods. If your data is worth a significant chunk of money to you, I would suggest seeking professional data recovery services. Step 1 Wrap the hard drive in some kind of absorbent material (dish cloth, ShamWow, etc...) Step 2 Put the hard drive in a sealed bag (ziplock bag, anti-static bag, etc...) Step 3 Put the hard drive in the freezer for several hours. Step 4a Take the hard drive out of the freezer, bag, and cloth. Connect it to your computer (while the system is powered off). Start the computer and be ready to start pulling data off of it as soon as possible (assuming that it finishes booting). Step 4b It actually works much better if you don't rely on the operating system installed on the bad hard drive. You could use an IDE/SATA to USB adapter to connect the bad drive to a computer that already has an operating system loaded and ready to go. With an adapter, you can also connect the drive to the computer while it is already running. Using this method, you will buy yourself some extra time and increase your chances of recovering the data that you need.

A Trick to Speed Up Your Slow Computer

With millions of computers running slow throughout the World, it's no wonder that speed up your machine is one of the hottest technology topics around. However, most computer technicians will tell you that the "only" way to speed up your PC is to get some expensive upgrades or a new machine. However, there is another way. You can use this simple trick to make your PC run extremely quickly and here's how to do it. Before I explain the trick, you first need to realize the truth about why most computers run slow. It all boils down to a part of your system called the "registry" which is one of the most important parts of your system. The registry is a database which stores all the settings and personalization settings for your PC, allowing your computer to "remember" a variety of settings even when your PC is turned off and on again. Although the registry is very important, it's actually one of the biggest causes of a slow system. You see, because the registry is responsible for all your personal information, it's constantly being accessed by Windows. Each time you use your PC, Windows is constantly opening and editing 100's of registry files, which causes a major issue. You see, because there are so many registry files open at once, your computer is often confused about which ones it has open, leading it to save many of them in the wrong way. This not only makes these files corrupt, but it also means that your computer has to take longer to read them, slowing it down. This is a big problem which is actually the biggest cause of your computer running slow, and hardly anyone knows about it because the registry is constantly operating in the background of Windows. The problem is that since the registry is constantly being used by Windows, any corrupt registry files will just make Windows take longer than expected to read them, making it slow down. And because Windows doesn't know how to fix these files itself, it ends up spending longer and longer trying to open them next time, making your computer run like a snail. The trick to make your PC work faster couldn't be easier. Luckily, there have been a selection of software tools developed called "registry cleaners". These are tools which scan through the registry database and fix all the problems that are inside it. This means that in order to make your computer run a lot faster, you just need to be able to use one of these tools to scan through the entire registry database and fix all the problems that are in there. If you can get a good registry cleaner which is able to fix the most files inside your system, you will actually be able to make your PC run like new... because new computers run so fast as they don't have any corrupt registry files inside them.
From our experience, the best registry cleaner to speed up your PC is a tool called RegAce

The Science Scientists Forgot: Privacy and Security - Who Needs Them Anyway?

This year marks the 31th anniversary of the first mobile phone in Australia. Ten years later, in the Swiss headquarters of CERN, the Computer Scientist Tim Berners Lee created the World Wide Web. Despite the relative 'youth' of these technologies, it is hard to imagine a world without them. They are fundamental. They have changed the way we interact forever. They have changed the way we communicate, the way we work and the way we relax. As always, there is a price to pay for such a rapid change and development in technology. As a society, we have left gaping holes in security and privacy as we march on, ever modernising and digitising. These effects are so far reaching that they concern the security of nations, the integrity of corporations and the privacy of individuals. Yet are scientists and engineers to blame? When have we ever stopped and considered the privacy and security implications of the technology we develop? In 2010 Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's atomic energy agency, announced that completion of Bushehr (Iran's first Nuclear power plant) would be delayed a further 3 months. They denied any connection to 'stuxnet'. Stuxnet, a computer worm, has been described by the Internet security firm Semantic as "the most complex threat they have ever analysed". Described as a master of stealth, stuxnet transmitted itself to over 45,000 devices; of which 60% were in Iran. Ordinary computer users would not have noticed a change; for there was nothing to notice. It was designed to install itself on a USB flash drive, and hide. It then waited for the right set of conditions to occur. Those conditions are unique to specific Siemens machines called SCADA systems. These are high end machines that run and monitor systems such as manufacturing plants, water treatment facilities, civil defence systems and... power plants around the world. Even the smallest security breach to one of these systems could wreck havoc on society - power plants would halt, water treatment systems would stop, traffic control systems would crumble. The elegance of stuxnet was the target computer didn't need to be connected to the Internet at all - all it needed was an infected USB to be inserted into one of these high-end SCADA systems. Stuxnet was not looking for just any SCADA system, but rather it had targets. Curiously the only SCADA systems believed to be affected by the worm were those involved in the Iranian nuclear program. It is believed that stuxnet was the product of a state-backed attack to delay Iran's nuclear ambitions. Politically motivated, no doubt; but stuxnet serves to highlight an important point - technology is now a weapon, and security our only defence. In a world of increasing technology and connectedness, it is near impossible to keep any system isolated. Traffic systems, airports, power plants... all are susceptible to similar attacks. Our society has modernised and interconnected itself so rapidly that scientists and engineers who create the technology have been unable to strike the balance between security and advancement. Nations are not the only ones affected. In April 2011, the Japanese juggernaut Sony and its PlayStation Network and Qriocity service were crippled by hackers for a cringe-worthy 23 days - an eternity in Internet time. In the process, over 77 million credit cards and other personally identifiable information was stolen. The examples are plentiful: Britain's National Health Service (hacked), CityGroup network (some 200,000 clients' information stolen), Epsilon database (2500 companies' emailing lists stolen). Even the Australian government is vulnerable to cyber attack. Despite similar attacks back in 2007, in February of this year the government was stung once again. Up to 10 Federal ministerial computers (including the Prime Minister's) were compromised. Perhaps the most confronting breaches to our own privacy and security are self-inflicted. The technology that represents the biggest breach of our privacy and security is often the most integral and entrenched... our mobile phones. Our mobile phones never leave us. They are the last thing we check at night as we go to sleep, and the first when we wake. One smart phone alone has the computing power that was used to send man to the moon. Despite this, society is generally blind to the risks they present; and to the implications this causes. Ever since GPS chips started appearing in phones there has been a resulting privacy fallout. Apple's latest iPhones come with GPS tracking built-in; should the phone become lost or stolen. However, this service is always on; and because our phones are always with us, it becomes a very simple and covert way to track someone's whereabouts. GPS tracking is a feature, not an oversight. Without much difficulty at all, parents can covertly track their children's whereabouts, wives can check up on their husbands, and bosses can monitor their staff. Nowadays, when a picture is taken, most GPS-enabled phones will automatically include the location in the photo data. This isn't a problem until the image is widely distributed; and potentially thousands can discover the location it was taken. With services like email, Twitter and Facebook; this is easy. Most will strip out the location data, but many, including email, will not. Technology such as this runs the risk of exposing the locations where photos are taken, with pinpoint accuracy. Often, these are people's homes and workplaces. Sometimes, the apps are also to blame. Blendr is a mobile dating app with a twist - It shows users how many kilometers they are from each other. Many such users are unaware, but by sampling distances from three different positions and using triangulation, it's possible to compute a person's location, without them explicitly revealing it. Chinese and US researchers have shown a proof-of-concept Android smart phone application that spies in on users' phone calls, listening for credit card numbers and pins. With the app running in the background, when the user made a call, the app would monitor the microphone for someone speaking or dialing a string of numbers (as in telephone banking) then log the information surreptitiously. It was just an experiment, but startling nonetheless. The solution is clear... there is no going back. The only solution is to move forward. Society owes a great deal of gratitude to the scientists and engineers who create these immensely powerful technologies, but it does not excuse these professionals from their responsibilities. There is a high risk to our privacy and security today. It is the responsibility of the creators to inform and make society aware of the dangers of these technologies, rather than just providing them. Whether it's a nation, a corporation or an end user... security is more important than we think. We need to address the issue of privacy and security in the industry, and for scientists and engineers; security and privacy need to be a priority, not an after thought.

A Trick to Boost Windows 7 Computer Speed - This Hidden Trick Speeds Up Windows 7 & Your Internet

Windows 7 might be a brand new operating system, but it's still prone to running slowly and with a lot of errors. This is a big issue that makes many people unable to use their PCs very well, and leads them to become unable to run effectively and smoothly. Fortunately, there's a hidden trick you can use to speed up your PC even if you're a beginner. There's a problem with Windows 7 that makes your system unable to run as smoothly or effectively as possible. This problem is caused by a part of Windows called the 'registry' which is a database that stores the settings and information for your PC. The registry has been a central part of Windows since its introduction in Windows '98 but has also been causing the terrible slow-speed that Windows often has for that long as well. The registry causes your PC to run slow because it is constantly becoming corrupt and damaged. Every time you use your computer, it's opening 100's of registry files to help it run. These files contain information about things such as your desktop background and your latest emails. It's a very important part of your computer but is also the main cause of why it runs slow. Every time you use your PC, it's constantly got too many registry files open, making it get confused and save many of them in the wrong way. This causes the files to become damaged and unable to be opened on time, making your computer run able to use the files it needs. The trick to fixing the speed and performance of Windows 7 is to make sure the registry database is constantly fixed and maintained. And to do this, you just need to be able to use a registry cleaner tool. These are software applications that scan through the registry and fix any of the damaged or corrupt files that are inside there. If you get a good tool, it will fix all the corrupt and damaged registry files inside Windows 7, allowing your computer to run quickly and have your Internet running fast as well. To use these, you should download one from the Internet, install it and then let it fix all the errors it finds.
Using a registry cleaner to Speed up Windows is one of the most effective ways to do it. However, you need to use the best tools in order to get the best results. Click Here to speed up Windows 7.

Importance of IP Assembly Is Ever Growing

Despite there being a worldwide recession in full effect the demand for portable multi function devices is growing massively. There are three main benefits that SOC brings that makes them desirable to use with mobile devices. Size, Functionality and Energy consumption. In order to maximise the number of features and range of functionality of these devices and to extend the battery life as far as possible manufacturers turn to SOC or system on chip designs. The variety of SOC designs are multiplying in line with the devices. Every new iteration brings with it new features that require new chip designs to handle them optimally. Of course it is not practical nor is it economically viable to build a new chip design from scratch every time a new variant of the iPhone comes out. This is where IP assembly comes into play. Most system on chip designers will take previously established intellectual property and recombine or restructure it to create additional functionality. Generally the IP assembly will be made up from the companies own stock of IP and sometimes IP licensed from external companies, depending on the companies intention and size. The IP can be thought of as being stored in blocks like Lego. Each block represents a separate functionality. These blocks can be attached together to create a larger construction that has all the functionality of the blocks it contains. While this method is generally more cost effective than designing a whole chip from the ground up it is quite a bit more difficult than simply sticking pieces of Lego together. This can be seen in the amount of hardware changes that are generally made with IP assembly chips. They are very limited. Many companies take fully fledged chip designs and apply almost no hardware changes and instead focus on streamlining the interface programming. The idea is to focus on niche use and ensure a product that works best for its intended function rather than trying to create SOC's that provide totally unique or unprecedented functionality. The chip would be then sold on the few features that differentiate it from the rest of the chips that share the majority of its design. Considering the huge effort required to ensure each of the IP 'blocks' in the IP assembly process communicate with each other properly. It is not necessarily clear that the verification process is lessened any by using existing IP. Since IP assembly has become such a commonplace practice IP integration platforms have been developed to assist the planning of the IP assembly process. These can save not only on time but also on costs by reducing the likelihood of expensive respins being needed. As these systems become more effective and efficient they will allow manufacturers to integrate ever more complex IP at ever lower cost. They can also increase the robustness of chip designs by sorting and logging errors in previous designs and highlighting where they may occur in later designs. With SOC design continuing at pace IP assembly seems to be a distinct area of industry growth.
Gene Baker is an author of articles in a variety of areas including IP assembly. See http://www.duolog.com for more information on IP assembly.

A Trick to Speed Up Any Windows Computer

The trick to speeding up Windows is to fix the problems that are slowing it down. All Windows computers run ina way that requires several different components all run smoothly and effectively. The 'system' of Windows is designed in a way that requires many different parts of your PC to run smoothly, otherwise they could make your system run extremely slowly. The reason why most Windows computers run slowly is all down to a your PC being unable to process the settings, files or programs it needs fast enough. This causes it to take longer to read the files it needs, slowing it down. This is why many computers run slow... and the cause of these issues is almost always inside a part of your computer called the 'registry'. The registry is the biggest cause of a slow PC, and it's because it is prone to it becoming corrupted. The registry is a database which stores the settings, options and system files for Windows, and is the biggest reason why many Windows PCs run slowly. Every time you use your PC, the registry is constantly being opened and read too many times, which makes Windows confused, forcing it to save many of these files in the wrong way. This causes them to become corrupted and unreadable, which slows down your system. The trick to speed up your Windows PC is to clean out all the damaged registry files that are slowing it down. This is done by using a 'registry cleaner' tool which scans through the registry database and removes any of the damaged and corrupted files that are inside it. To use one of these tools, you first need to download one off the Internet. There are many different tools all around the Internet, on popular download sites and private sites as well. You need to download one, install it and then it will scan your PC for errors. When you scan your PC with a registry cleaner, it scans for errors that are causing it to run slowly. The cleaner will check every registry file on your PC and then remove any of the damaged ones that are causing issues, allowing your computer to speed up. In order for this trick to work, you really need to get a good registry tool that can remove the largest number of errors from your system.

Why Would You Need 3G Mobile Hotspot

At the turn of the century, mobile phone networks were expanding and companies such as Nokia and Siemens were about to enter a boom. Providing mobile services was a profitable business with information required by customers steadily increasing and the need to stay connected via phones and short messaging services has become essential. This change soon evolved as mobile phone companies decided to make phones more than just simple device who made calls and equipped them with the latest multimedia offerings and facilities. It is by that method that the world soon embraced phones with cameras and music capabilities as well as audio recording. Simultaneously the development and boom of the internet was evident from the fact that connectivity among businesses was increasing all over. Moreover, more and more businesses were developing their networks using the internet while the internet also served a major social purpose. To enhance the connectivity of devices amongst themselves, phones started developing Bluetooth capabilities where multiple platforms of phones could connect with each other and share information and files. Although this feature was very handy, the system did have some limitations which caused the people to want for more. The next stage of evolution in mobile technology was the availability of internet to hand held devices in the form of 3G networks which made the sharing of data and information across the networks much faster. As a result, activities over the internet were greatly facilitated and made much more efficient. Phone and portable devices were also making great use of wireless fidelity devices that were connected to the internet through broadband or cable connection. Thus, providing many users with internet facility from a single source. This is the same technology that is being used by a 3G mobile hotspot. Currently this facility is only being provided in a limited area and by a limited number of companies which have 3G services and which have enough service capability to meet the requirements needed to have such a facility. The 3G mobile hotspot offers high speed internet connection to a singular device that is provided to you by your internet or mobile service provider. When the device is running it can actually connect with up to 5 different devices each with wireless fidelity connections. The advantage of 3G mobile hotspots is that the system itself is quite portable and can literally be carried around in your pocket thus allowing for extra mobility. The system ensures that the connection is of high speed which means that activities can be done on the device without any lags. The fact that up to five devices can be connected is very handy and allows multi-tasking. Moreover, one can easily access emails, carry out web conferences and surf the internet with the help of a 3G mobile hotspot. The downside to this facility is that there are extra charges per volume of data shared and that you have to buy certain packages and this is certainly not as enticing as a single broad band connection connected with Wi-Fi but if internet usage and travelling is high then one should definitely invest in a 3G mobile hotspot.

How to Make Windows 7 Run Fast - A Trick That Computer Technicians Use to Boost PC Speed in Minutes
Even though Windows 7 is the latest operating system to come from Microsoft, many people are still reporting how slowly their new 7 PC is running. This problem has been with computers for many years and is still a major issue today. Fortunately, it's a problem which is actually very easy to solve in this version of Windows, thanks to a simple trick. The way to fix any slow PC is to cure the problems that make it run slow in the first place. Windows has been designed to run as smoothly and effectively as possible in any circumstance - and the only reason why it runs slow is because your PC has problems such as errors or damaged system files. This means that in order to fix this problem, you need to be able to fix the issues that make your Windows 7 PC run slow. The 'trick' that most computer technicians use is actually very simple, and revolves around the "registry" of Windows. The registry is basically a database which stores information and settings for your computer, and is where your PC stores information such as your latest emails, desktop wallpaper and even your screen resolution for your PC. Unfortunately, the registry database is prone to becoming damaged and corrupted, making Windows unable to read the files it needs from it. And because Windows requires 100's of registry files each time you use your system, this problem causes your PC to run slower and slower as it has to read the files it needs. The issue of a corrupt & damaged registry is the main cause of Windows 7 running slow. And as you use your PC, more and more registry settings are becoming corrupt & damaged... making Windows run slower. It's like a vicious circle which eventually ends in your system being extremely difficult to use. In order to make Windows 7 run fast, the first thing that most computer technicians do is to clean out the registry database to make sure that it has no corrupt or damaged settings inside. To do this, you should open up a " registry cleaner" program which you can download from the Internet, and let it can your PC. The trick is to first download & run a registry cleaner tool to clean out any of the damaged or corrupted settings that Windows 7 has inside it. These software programs scan through your system and remove any of the damaged or corrupt settings that your PC has slowing it down, allowing Windows to run smoother and more reliably. Getting a good registry cleaner - which can remove the largest number of registry errors from your system - can actually make your PC run like new. New PCs don't have any corrupt or damaged registry settings to slow them down, so if you can use this trick to remove the largest number of registry settings, you could boost your PC speed dramatically.
In order to speed up Windows 7 a lot, you should first try using a 'registry cleaner' to boost the speed and reliability of your system. You can download Windows 7 registry cleaner to boost the speed of your system.

Choosing the Right Computer and IT Solutions Provider for Your Business

As your business grows, so will the need to update your equipment to ensure that you can offer your clients and customers the professional service they require at a reasonable turnaround. The challenge with operating a business that relies upon Internet and computer connectivity is that new innovations tend to appear faster than many of us can keep up! If you are currently in the market for a new business telephone and Internet system, you will want to work with a company that stays on the pulse of the digital age and is available for training and troubleshooting. Typical services your communications provider will offer your may include:
    • VoIP Telephone Installation - VoIP, or voice over IP, is a popular solution for businesses interested in integrating their phone systems with their existing or upgraded Internet. With a VoIP telephone setup, all telephone communication is handled via the Internet rather than through phone lines. This means that your business could save money in the long because there will be less cabling involved.
    • Data Security Services - Business IT solutions will provide you with sound, quality data protection, enabling you to work worry-free. This will include installation and updating of virus software across the network, services to back up your data, and anti-hacking measures.
    • E-Mail Services - E-mail is important to your business, and working with an IT company allows you to obtain an efficient e-mail service that blocks unwanted junk messages from your company inboxes. Employees should also be able to access mail via mobile devices when they are off-site.
    • Internet Conferencing - Thanks to video conferencing, your business can expand as you shorten the distance between you and out of town clients. Quality conferencing makes for crystal clear video and sound as you conduct business via online video.
  • Network Design - If you have ideas beyond cookie-cutter business Internet setups you may find that a custom integration for your company works best. You will want to consult with an IT company to learn about your options.
The IT company you choose should also be adept at handling emergency outages, periodic inspections of your company's firewall and virus applications, and regular data restores in the event of problems. Especially if your data resides on your own server, you want a company that can take care of any related repairs. The more work done online by your business, the more crucial an IT company is to keeping it running.

What's New in Flat Panel Displays

First of all you need to learn your HD from your LCD and differentiate between a LCD flat panel and a Plasma flat panel. Most of the current flat panel displays are actually LCD, that is liquid crystal displays. These are generally backlit and have the enormous advantage of being quite thin and relatively lightweight. Many consumers have now switched over from the older style televisions, a process which requires robust removal men. These older televisions have what's known as CRT screens, or cathode ray tube screens. These were less reliable than the LCD or plasma flat panel screens. It's only after you have the old television taken away that you realise how large your living room actually is. As the consumer demand grew for larger screen sizes the size of the tube grew also, until it took over a significant area. The much thinner LCD or plasma screens are a boon to interior designers. While LCD displays tend to be used in watches and calculators and other small items, plasma screens are typically used in large television screens. These actually consist of two glass panels separated by a thin gap filled with a neon gas. The glass panels have a series of electrodes running across them and the technology uses electrically charged ionized gases. Differences between plasma screens and LCD flat panel displays One of the key differences is that the plasma screens are made from glass, which reflects more light than a LCD screen. The downside of this is that they can produce glare and sometimes an anti-glare coating is put on the plasma flat panel. The plasma screens have the advantage of having wider viewing angles than LCD and can produce deeper black colours. On the downside, the plasma screens do use more electricity than the LCD ones. Next up are the HD screens The TV screens most commonly seen in retail now are the HD, or High Definition, plasma screens. These displays usually have a resolution of 1,024 x 768. In terms of the future of these kinds of technologies, one of the challenges is to increase the energy efficiency, especially given the growing demand for increased size and the tendency for users to leave the devices switched on. In 2010, the number of plasma TVs shipped globally topped 18.2m. We don't yet have the figures for 2011, but despite the global downturn, this has probably increased again. What's next? A 2011 technology exhibition in Japan (FPD International) showcased a 3 millimetre thick OLED TV. This is an incredibly thin flat panel screen, and still maintains a really fast response rate with full HD resolution. A slow response rate can result in blurring or distortion of the picture. OLED is another term we better explain here. This stands for organic light-emitting diode, which is a bit of a mouthful. This is a recent technology in which there is a layer of organic semiconductor between two electrodes. Other technologies coming down the line are SED - surface conduction electron-emitter display and also FED, which is field emission display. The same show also introduced 'invisible glass'. This is a kind of glass that has 99.5 per cent transparency, compared to 92 per cent for ordinary glass. This would reduce the glare and reflections on flat panel screens. The technology giants are kept busy!

More Cool Web Tricks

If you ask most people what frustrates them most about the Internet, many of them will tell you "It's the little things!" It seems like all the great tricks and tips that make people exclaim "STOP! How did you do that?" never make it into any manual (at least where I can find them). My father (and co-author of "Turn Words Into Traffic") calls it the "reverse oral tradition" of computing, where children teach parents the survival skills of PC life. Well, if you want to look good to your kids or buddies around the water cooler, check out the following cool web tricks. Cool Google Tricks Virtually everyone knows that Google.com ranks at the top of most people's search engine lists, but it does a lot more than just tell you where to find vitamins or information on George Washington's wooden teeth! Need a map to a specific location? Type in the address, city and state of virtually any location in the US, hit the search button, and Google serves up several different map providers across the Web. Want to know what software application a certain file goes with on your computer? Input the file name into Google's search box and a number of reference sites will help you know exactly what purpose a file serves. I actually used this to feature to identify a piece of "spyware" lurking on my computer. Want to know who's calling you on the phone in the US? You can just input the phone number on your caller ID or cell phone display into the Google search box and get information on listed numbers before your answering machine can even pick up! Log on to http://www.google.com/help/features.html for more cool search features that harness the search power of Google. Text Zoom Next time you can't see small text clearly on a website, try holding down the "CTRL" key and then moving the scroll wheel on your mouse up and down. The text in your web browser (and some programs) will increase and decrease in size as you roll the wheel back and forth. This little trick provides an excellent means of quickly getting what you need from websites with tiny text. Slow Surfing? If your Internet Explorer web browser starts giving you problems, you might want to clean up your "Temporary Internet Files." Most people don't realize it, but when you leave a web page, it doesn't leave you! Most of the time you keep a copy of websites you visit on your hard drive and, over time, they build up. This collection of old web pages can eventually cause your surfing to slow to a crawl and even cause errors! Here's one way to clear out those old files. Click your "Start" button, then "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Disk Cleanup." After an initial check of your hard drive (which can take some time if it's the first time you've ever launched the utility), you can check the boxes of the files you wish to delete. To speed up your surfing, at a minimum, make sure you delete the "Temporary Internet Files." Surfing Shortcuts To quickly cycle back and forth through a series of web pages you've visited, hold down the "ALT" key and tap your left and right arrow keys. Left arrow takes you back while the Right arrow takes you forward. The Page Up and Page Down buttons allow you to quickly move up and down any web page without struggling to find the scroll bar slider on the right side of the page.
