Optimizing Windows Server NIC Cards

Here we had a high traffic server that was constantly having network related issues at the NIC level so I sought out to investigate what all these different configurations mean in the advanced tab for the adapter properties. For this example I'll be looking into HPNC373i but the exact available settings differ from one manufacture to another. First things first and I can't stress this enough, make sure you have the most up to date firmware and drivers from the manufacture's website. That in itself can make a world of difference. I'll be going through about the recommended settings for: - Ethernet Wire Speed - Receive Side Scaling - Flow Control - Speed & Duplex - Transmit Buffers - Receive Buffers - 802.1p 802.1p can remain disabled. What that does is mark packets for QOS purposes so that other intelligent upstream devices will prioritize traffic. In a standard Ethernet cable there are 4 pairs of wires (8 conductors). With 1000BaseT adapters as little as 2 of those pairs are used in the initial power up sequence to negotiate the data speed for the connection. This can result in problems so Ethernet Wirespeed enables the adapter to establish a connection at a slower speed (This is a Broadcom chipset specific driver). I recommend disabling this as it causes problems sometimes, speed issues mainly. Flow Control should be disabled. What it does is moderate the flow of traffic in networks mixed of Gb and Mb traffic. Usually does more harm than good since most of that stuff already exists already in the TCP stack. Receive Buffers should be set as high as possible. This specifies how much memory is allocated to the NIC card for processing. One thing to note is that servers with low memory this may be better left to auto. The buffers are taken from the server physical memory. Transmit Buffers similar to receive buffers is related to how many packets the NIC can have in its queue. Always have this set to the highest. Transmit buffers all come from physical server memory. Speed should be set to the maximum setting that your switch can support and Duplex should be set to FULL. You will then need to also go back and configure the switch or router that the server is connected to with the same configuration. Receive side scaling should be used if the server has multiple cores and is not hyper threaded. RSS offloads the NIC process work to each core of the server instead of just one. This is useful for great spreading of CPU load. I would also recommend at this time to remove any unnecessary network protocols and make sure that the bindings are ordered correctly according to your network needs. You should also make sure your primary network connection is first priority. You can find the binding and priority order by right clicking Network Connections > Click Properties> Click Advanced > Then choose advanced settings. From there you can change the order for example moving file and print sharing to the top and moving your primary network connection to the top.

Prototypes and Pilot Networks

It is a very good practice to check any fresh design before approval and implementation. Testing delivers a proof-of-concept for the proposal. The testing stage gives you the opportunity to pinpoint parts of the project that do not function correctly and redesign them. Many corporate networks have design changes. For that reason, the network designers must always test the function of critical areas of the new design before making the final plan. There are two common approaches used to test a net strategy: Creating a prototype net - A prototype net contains only the portion of the network needed to test a specific capability or function. Prototype networks are isolated from the current network. Set up a pilot net - A pilot is a test of new capability or functionality using a small part of the existing network. Both approaches test the functions of the project that disturb the network's capability to meet the high-priority corporate goals. Choosing a Pilot or Prototype The choice to make a prototype or a pilot test depends on the next elements: 1. the kind of testing required, 2. the possible disruption from a pilot on the current network. Prototypes are typically easy to create and control because no active net employers are affected. In prototype nets, it is simple to take a network appliance offline, make configuration or hardware changes, and repeat the test under different conditions. In a pilot, this kind of test can create long disruptions in the network. When to Make a Pilot? Various functions of the future net can be tested using prototypes. On the other hand, using a pilot is a fine option in the next circumstances: When the prototype network is not large enough to test functionality - Testing how a routing protocol is working in a net with two hundred network appliances may not be possible in a prototype. When the performance of the net is reliant on the operation of a particular network appliance or third-party technology - A good example is a costly video scoreboard or a third-party provided WAN link. The only big design modification that needs a pilot is the installation of the Frame Relay connection to the distant sites. A pilot is a fine selection to test this connection because it tests the real connection quality along with the device configuration and functionality. Creating a prototype to test a net project entails a significant amount of planning. The network architect generates a test plan before beginning the procedure, to confirm that the goals of the test are clear and measurable. A test strategy is mandatory for all the modern networks.

5 Tips To Keep Your Files Secure

We are currently living in a connected world. Everywhere you go, you will most likely have access to a computer with an Internet connection. The computer is used for various things from completing a school assignment to banking. It is therefore, extremely crucial to keep all your files secure in order not be have your personal information compromised. Here are 5 tips on how you can keep your personal information and files secure. Tip #1: When using the Internet, always use a difficult to guess password on all websites. Avoid using a single combination of username/password for all websites. If your password is too easy to remember, then it is probably not good enough. Use Password Manager programs like KeePass to keep track of your passwords so that you do not have to crack your brain in order to memorize all your username/password combinations. Tip #2: Always make sure your computer itself is password protected. There are ways to configure your computer to auto login or remove the login functionality but you must never do this! Your computer is the gateway to your personal information and access to the Internet. Tip #3: Use encryption software to protect sensitive data. Keep all your sensitive data in one main folder and use a software like TrueCrypt to create an encrypted volume. We must protect our information from all eventualities. With encrypted volume to store all your sensitive data, even if you lose your laptop, your data will be safe. Tip #4: Always keep your firewall and anti-virus software up-to-date. Choose to auto-update so that you do not have to worry about scheduling a time to manually update it. The computer firewall protects you from hacking attempts. You should also not visit suspicious websites or click on suspicious emails unless you are sure of the source. Tip #5: There are many public places offering Internet access. While this may be convenient, do not use such facility to access your private or sensitive information. Do not even open up your personal file using a public computer because you will not know if the computer has been compromised. Use these 5 tips to keep your files secure. There will be moments where you are tempted to ignore these tips out of convenience. But always remember the value of your personal and sensitive information. Once they are compromised, the repercussions may be really damaging.

Aircraft Display Systems: Ensuring Flight Precision and Safety

It is always been a challenge to pilots to make every plane ride as safe as possible, especially during instances when there are visual obstructions. However, because of advanced automotive engineering, pilots can fly planes safely despite different blockages in the clearance. With the invention of different display systems such as the Enhanced Flight Visual System (EFVS), Head-up display (HUD), and Primary Flight Display (PFD) aircraft can be operated with ease any time of the day despite harsh weather conditions. The aforementioned electronic display systems are used to achieve flight precision when there is low visibility. Enhanced flight vision systems are used when the plane is operated during night time. They have night vision capabilities that display images of the terrain when there is minimal light. Enhanced vision systems are also handy when thick clouds obstruct the pilot's view. They have image sensors such as infrared and thermal imaging sensors. For a more natural view of the topography, Head-up display system is used. It allows transparent view of the site, so pilots need not take their eyes off the windscreen to look at electronic display systems below. It displays graphics, flight information, and radar data that guide pilots for safe navigation of the aircraft mid-air. It also uses LED technology for a clearer view of the field. This has been used for military and corporate airline transports for several years, but commercial airlines also use this for better and easier navigation. Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) also help in providing better field vision for pilots by displaying computer generated images, images that help pilots understand their flying environment. The SVS now includes liquid crystal display and global positioning system to see the terrain better. With its well-connected printed circuit boards and high-technology computer imaging, 3D data can be displayed. The field of aviation uses combined display systems to enhance the aircraft's vision systems during in-flight. Printed circuit board manufacturers, electronic engineers, and flight vision experts work hand in hand in fusing different display systems. Using these imaging systems provides a lot of operational benefits. In the airline industry, airline companies are able to offer more international flights as their planes have display systems that allow pilots to have a clear view of the topography even when there are visual obstructions. With their complex printed circuit boards and high-tech electronics engineering, planes can be operated with precision, safety, and convenience. This technology is, indeed, beneficial in ensuring that pilots and passengers will be taken to destinations safely.

Basic Computer Networking

The invention of the computer undoubtedly revolutionized the world. As they rapidly evolved, new features were added to make their operation easier and increase their usefulness. People adopted them into their homes, and businesses began using them to store and process data, as well. Soon, the need to share information between computers gave rise to more efficient ways to transport information on disks, but the need for two computers to communicate directly was still very high. Thus, the demand for networking was born. Computers today thrive off of connectivity to the world wide web, but the internet was born from the idea of having many computer connected together simultaneously, able to share data freely. That idea is still very alive and present today, and it has become easier than ever to set up and use a network to share information quickly and easily. The basic form of a network is what is called and "ad-hoc" network, which is essentially just two computers connected together to share information. This can be done with a wired connection for stability and speed, or a wireless connection, since most computers these days come equipped with wireless network capabilities. Ad-hoc networks are typically used to share information quickly, and usually aren't used for prolonged periods of time, since they may not support all the features that a traditional router-based network does. A more common network seen in more situations is one that is run through a "hub" or "access point." These devices act as a nexus point between several computers, allowing the computers to be aware of each other. The computers can share data between one another, much like the ad-hoc network, but many more computers can be connected together in this way to form a larger network. More complex networks rely on "servers" to manage the data that flows between the computers, and may act as a central point that all the computers can access data from. These types of networks typically exist in larger businesses, since employees may need to store and retrieve data at all hours of the day, and require a persistent, reliable way to access this data. Servers also power the internet that most people are familiar with, storing all the information that people need when they wish to access web sites and services. Setting up a computer network has been simplified considerably in recent years. What used to require specialized knowledge and sometimes years of training to set up can now be automated with the use of intelligent software and hardware that adheres to established standards. In order to set up a home network that allows computers to access the internet, all most people will need is a router and modem of sort (depending on the company that provides your internet connection, usually cable or DSL, although wireless broadband is becoming more commonplace). Many internet service providers actually offer this hardware for rent or purchase to ensure that their customers are using hardware that is compatible and interoperable. In most cases, the average consumer will not need to look beyond their local electronics retail store to find what they need to set up a home or small business network.

Satellite Technology: Providing Convenience in the Modern World

Satellites are mainly used in communications. They revolve around the earth, receiving and relaying signals from different location points. Without them, the world might not be enjoying ease in communicating. The first satellite was used for astronomical purposes. Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, has been launched to collect and send important data through radio signals about the situation of the earth's atmosphere, the ionosphere, and the earth's orbital changes. Presently, astronomical satellites are used to capture images outside the earth's surface using different sensors like x-rays, gamma rays, infrared, and ultraviolet. In fact, the most popular and the most powerful telescope today, the Hubble Space telescope, is actually a satellite. Satellites are also used in identifying weather conditions in different parts of the earth. They collect and send information about cloud formations and cloud movements. Weather satellites have been used for several decades. Without them, people might still be relying on primitive methods in identifying weather conditions. These satellites are also used in capturing information on ocean currents, storms, fires, and volcanic activities. Military communication and intelligence gathering depend on satellites. With satellite technology, global connectivity is achieved even though military men are located in remote areas. Military satellites are also used as observation satellites deployed to spy and capture images of different locations around the globe. Without high-technology satellites, there might be no navigation systems that will be used today. Global positioning systems (GPS) that are being used by the military and the civilians alike are dependent on the information sent by the satellites. The GPS is initially intended to be used for military purposes, but it was eventually introduced to consumers for different applications. These satellites have circuit boards with high aspect ratio holes to send accurate images and data to GPS users. Television systems also depend on the power of satellites. Geostationary satellites are made with high frequency materials so that they can send videos and images to television users in numerous locations. The invention of these satellites made it possible for the television industry to achieve significant growth. They seem stationary, but they actually rotate with the earth. They are seemingly stationary so that they can send data to fixed antennas more efficiently. The telecommunications industry also takes benefit from satellite technology. With their complex mechanics, advanced ipc-6012 class 3 circuit boards and modern electronic systems, people can now communicate despite wide distances any time of the day.

Common Defects on PCs

We all use computers every day in our home and work lives. This means that, at some time or another, all of us suffer from common PC defects and problems. Computers are complex, interrelated systems but most of the everyday issues commonly faced can be traced back to these three causes. Too Long Since a Reboot A restart should be the first step to troubleshooting any computer issue. It will fix some problems, especially "one-off" abnormalities, right away. A lot of temporary things happen while a computer is running. Programs and drivers open in memory and stay open, RAM is consumed and never given back, temp files are created and more. This is just how computers work, but it all adds up and compounds over time. A reboot clears all these temporary files and operations, offering a fresh start that might clear up strange problems. Malware Many computer defects, such as constant freezes, popup ads, slow performance and crashes, are caused by malware. This is a blanket term that stands for "malicious software" and it covers both viruses and adware. Viruses are malicious programs designed to steal data, hijack your computer for nefarious purposes, crash your system or any number of other negative effects. Adware usually redirects your browser and homepage to unintended sites, causes popup ads and installs unwanted software filled with advertisements and code that downloads more adware. The big problem with adware is that it's specifically written to be hard to remove. Free anti-malware programs like Malware Bytes, Avast and Super Antispyware do a decent job, though. They should be installed, updated and run until their results come back clean. If malware persists despite your best removal efforts, it's time to back up your data and reinstall Windows. Too Many Background Programs Over the life of our computers, we install many programs. A big problem with programs is that many, by default, add themselves to your computer's Startup list, meaning they start at boot and run in the background. This is convenient because they will start faster when you need them but it also means they take a certain amount of memory. Too many programs running in the background could mean your computer doesn't have enough memory left for the programs you actually are trying to use right now. The easiest way to eliminate unnecessary background programs from stealing resources is to turn them off. A Windows utility called "MSCONFIG" is a simple way to do this. The easiest way to get to it is to click "Start, Run" and type "msconfig." From there, click the "Startup" tab. Unchecking an item removes it from startup. A word of warning: keep a web browser window open and double or even triple check each item before you turn it off. Some of these programs are absolutely necessary. If you're uncomfortable with doing this yourself, consult a repair professional.

How to Write Your 2012 Technology Roadmap in Minutes

For the next 12 months do you know where you are going with technology? Do you know how much you are going to spend on IT? Are you just along for the ride, playing fireman and only putting out fires as you go? How will you measure your success for the next year? As we begin the New Year is it an excellent opportunity to spend a little bit of time thinking strategically about where your organization is going, why you are going there, and how to arrive. As well, arrive within an approved budget and set expectations. Don't make this planning task bigger than it needs to be. A well-thought-out Technology Roadmap consists of 4 parts: Problem Statements Solution Option(s) Recommended Solution Executive Summary These parts don't need to be long diatribes. In fact, the longer they are the less likely they'll be read by others. Think a couple sentences for each point. More detail can be added later if requested. Just having an outline of a plan will put you ahead of the majority of IT organizations. PROBLEM STATEMENTS IT is typically a very reactive group. Many people want to jump straight to the solution without considering the problem they are trying to solve; a user has a problem and you want to fix it. Don't be tempted to skip this step and go straight for the solution. Slow down and make yourself write a couple sentences as to what really is the problem you are trying to address. This process often exposes angles you haven't thought of and intersections with other problems in your organization. Technology problems are usually small symptoms of larger interconnected systems and processes. Stating the problem draws these connections out. Perhaps a more unified and simpler answer exists. Take the 10 minutes to think before you jump. SOLUTION(S) Now that you have defined the problem you can approach tactical response(s). It could be a single solution option - but many problems have multiple paths for resolution. You don't need to go overboard with options. It is best to keep it to 3 options at most - a low-cost, mid-cost, and the Cadillac option. With each option include the following: Dependencies (if any) Advantages Disadvantages (including risks) Cost Timeline You goal is to keep this brief - think summary - not verbosity. The goal of this exercise is not to write a dissertation and have every last detail considered but to put a framework around a technology discussion. Keep it simple; stick to the couple sentences guideline for each bullet point. RECOMMENDED SOLUTION Lastly, briefly state what the recommended solution is and why. Use this part to honestly asses what the minimum viable solution would be. We would all love the Cadillac solution - but will it be overkill, adding cost and complexity to the problem? Make sure to remember that you want a system to run with theminimal maintenance as possible. What is the right-size solution for your organization? EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Executive Summary is a rollup of the total costs and timeline of the recommended solutions. This will help with the decision making process to not only identify if costs are within budget (or what the budget ask should be) as well as what resources will be required to execute the roadmap. Taking the small bit of time to figure out where to spend your time and IT budget for the coming year will reap big rewards and give you a way to measure success. Whether you are a one person show or part of a large enterprise, is it worthwhile to set a known course for this next trip around the sun. Why not spend the time to make it the most productive year yet!

The DCP 7065DN Printer and Toner Information

The DCP 7065 Brother multifunctional printer recognizes the consumer need for a higher output at a lower price. You can get more bang for your buck with this specific model due to its work ethic for a low price. The toners last longer than other printer brands do. This is because they are specially formulated to save toner by having more pigment. More pigment means the cartridge can stretch longer because it needs less ink for the colors to jump off the page. They are bright blinding colors while using a fraction of the toner. The cartridges not only use less, but when they are empty they can be replaced individually. When they are individually replaced this means that you don't have to worry about buying an entire new cartridge for all the colors. You can snap the one color out and pop a new one in. In addition to replacing the colors individually, they are refillable and are able to be recycled. You may rotate the cartridges where if one needs to be replaced, you send the other one in to be refilled while you are using the new one and so on. Whether you are printing photos or important documents, this printer is capable of meeting all your printing needs. In combination with the intensity of the toners and the easy-to-use features, your prints will come out looking as if you have sent away for them at a professional printing company. How To Defrag Your Computer Easily

Defragmentation is the process which helps the user to reduce the disintegration of the files on the user's computer hard drive, a computers performance can be severely hampered if the hard drive connected to the computer gets fragmented. The user defragments their computer in order to reorganize their files in sequences so that the computer system runs faster. As all files gets arranged and placed in sequence and even files which acquires small places get stored in one place which allows the user to use more space. If the files saved on the computer are unevenly spread out on the hard drive, it can cause the computer to take longer period of time to search or retrieve these files as compared to searching for files that are stored in a sequence and arranged properly. This method helps the user to search for a file instantly. This method of defraying definitely improves the performance of your computer. Defragmenting your computers drive is a simple procedure that can be carried out by users at home and does not need much of technical knowledge. During the defragmentation process the computer automatically sorts out the files as per their usage and frequency of retrieval and stores these files accordingly, this not only helps make the computer faster, but also helps open up more space on the computers disks. You can follow this simple procedure to defragment your computer running a windows operating system: Uninstall programs or delete unwanted files which are unwanted and are taking up valuable disk space. This will make free space to store data that is required and relevant on the computer. This step also helps in arranging the files in proper order. Check that all the programs which are not required are closed. This will make sure that your computer is not busy or that no program is running in the back ground which will slow down the speed of defragmentation process. Make sure that all the programs which are automatically set to run at a particular time should be cancelled. Always make sure that you should run one program at a time for better effects. See that temporary files are deleted so that you free up more disk space. To clean the files from the disk you the run the cleanmgr program in the windows. Once you have completed these tasks, it is now time to defragment your computer. To defrag your computer, click on the start tab, select a program named dfrg.msc. Click on this program and then select the drive you wish to defrag i.e. C: drive which is default drive and then click on the defragment button. This would start the defragment process for your computer and arrange all your files in a proper manner. Once you have defragmented your computer hard drive, you would be able to see immediate results in terms of improved speed. It would take lesser time for you to access your files as well as retrieve them. It is advised to defrag your computer regularly as well as run the cleanmgr program to ensure that your computer hard drive does not fragment and reduce the speed of your computer.

Portable Document Format (PDF) Files

Everyone is familiar with PDF (Portable Document Format) files because of the free Adobe PDF reader program installed on computers. Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format specification and related software products developed by Adobe. The true benefit of PDF files is that they display and print documents that look exactly the same on all computers. The PDF standard permits people in different locations to work on the same documents. This is essential when I work as a Real Estate agent. Contracts and other legal documents need to be shared among many parties. It is essential that ever party view the documents exactly as do all the other parties to the Real Estate transaction. How can you effectively create and use PDF documents? Read on for the answers. There are many software tools for creating and manipulating PDF documents. Some tools are free tools and others are not. Some important tools are the tools that can create PDF files from Microsoft Word documents. With Word 2007 Microsoft provides a free software add-on that saves the Word and other Office documents as PDF files. This free software can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site. Microsoft Office 2010 has the save as PDF feature built-in. For the 2003 version of Microsoft Office other software is needed to create PDF documents from Office files. One program is Cute PDF Writer. This is a free for personal use program that depends upon Ghostscript software to produce PDF files. Generally, you can find both Cute PDF Writer and the companion Ghostscript programs at the same download location. When you search using these keywords listed in order of importance: "CutePDF Writer download free," you find the link to the CutePDF official site and the links to download the CutePDF Writer software. CutePDF Writer permits any program to print data as a PDF file. Microsoft Office 2003 and earlier can create PDF files by printing to the CutePDF Writer printer. The Open Office GNU (GNU's is Not Unix) General Public License office suite also has the ability to create PDF files. General Public License software is free for everyone to use and is generally very competitive with Microsoft Office Products in performance and features. Open Office opens and works on Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and other documents. Then Open Office can save them in a PDF or any of the Office formats you choose. Most scanners also scan and save data as PDF files. In some cases the scanner can create PDF files or JPG images. Later the scanner software can take the JPG images and convert them into PDF files. This is a very useful capability because you can add, delete, and reorder the JPG images and finally convert them into a single PDF file. Cheap Canon all-in-one printer scanners and Fujitsu scanners come with this software. There are other All-In-One (AIO) printers that provide similar functions. Just check the detailed software functions or product reviews to determine what functions are provided. Creating PDF files is a great software feature, but converting PDF files into Microsoft Word DOC files that can be edited by Word is even better. There are PDF to Word conversion programs. Some work well once you understand how to use them. Searching for "PDF to Word converter freeware" leads so sites that convert and email the word document to you or to some newer free PDF to Word conversion software. You may need to look at several links and test a program or two to find an acceptable free program. However, while the converting PDF to Word approach is helpful, editing PDF documents directly is somewhat more effective. PDF editing is performed by Adobe Acrobat which comes with some scanners. Otherwise Acrobat must be purchased. It is not necessary to purchase the latest and greatest version of Acrobat. The version that comes with scanners has sufficient features to perform most PDF document edits. The Acrobat Version 9.0 which accompanies many new scanners has several useful features including: 1. Breaking PDF files into separate files for each page of the document, 2. Re-combining the files into a single document, 3. Rearranging the pages before recombining the pages into a single document, 4. Rotating individual pages or the entire PDF document, 5. Deleting pages from a document, 6. Creating a form from a document that can be completed using a PDF reader program, and more. Creating forms from a PDF document is a terrific feature particularly when you work with many forms from diverse sources. A Real Estate agent uses forms specific to each locality. In Maryland there are specific forms for each county in the state. Additionally, bank foreclosures require different forms for each bank or government agency. Often they are sent as PDF files. The Acrobat forms wizard permits these PDF files to be turned into forms that can be completed using PDF readers on any computer. For a person whose handwriting skills are almost non-existent and whose typing skills are marginally better, this is a real boon. Another useful Acrobat feature is reducing the size of PDF files. It is easy for a 40 plus page PDF document to exceed an e-mail size limit of 10 MB or 16 MB. Acrobat has a file size reduction feature that sometimes solves this problem. When documents are scanned as full color documents they often are large files that cannot be e-mailed. The simple solution is to scan text documents as Black and White documents to reduce the file size. Color documents are the largest size, grey scale documents are smaller, and black and white documents are the smallest size documents. Scanning documents at a resolution of 150 dots per inch (dpi) rather than a resolution of 600 dpi or a 300 dpi reduces the document size helping it fit e-mail size limits. Reading or viewing and printing PDF files is performed using a PDF viewer such as the Acrobat Viewer provided by Adobe or the Foxit Software reader. A search using the keywords: "PDF reader free download" leads to the download locations for Foxit. Wow! This search also shows a new LuLu.com 3D PDF reader. Anything 3D is the current rage with Nerds. This new 3D reader begs to be tested. Freeware always has strings attached that sell something. Sometimes these strings are a polite sales pitch. More commonly free products come with an aggressive sales pitch similar to that used to sell used cars. The sales pitch here is a polite sales pitch. This implies that the Soda 3D PDF viewer is safe software to use on your computer. When you read PDF files with the Soda 3D viewer, they can be viewed as though they are an open book. You turn the 3D pages. It is most impressive. Looks like continued testing of this free 3D viewer using a PDF fill-in-the-blanks form file is in order. The PDF form works! When you work with computers, new technology and products pop up every day. Please pardon my surprise with this new free 3D PDF viewer. It looks good, but using it over an extended time period is the true test. When working with PDF files creating them from MS Word or Excel files is important. However, after the files are created, you need to manipulate them. This means importing pages into a single PDF file, adding pages, deleting pages, and exporting pages. Then turning a PDF file into a fill-in form is essential for many users particularly those that do not write well like myself. Finally tools for reading and printing PDF files are the most essential. Many tools can be found for free, but more serious users may wish to purchase the more advanced PDF editing and manipulation tools. Even for something as simple as your everyday printer, Canon has gained a sense of respect and loyalty from their customers for providing a reliable product to invest in. Important Tips to Protect Your Valuable Data

It amazes me how many people I come across who have had their hard drive fail and tell me that they have an external hard drive and they had been meaning to do a backup, but never have. Data recovery by a reputable company here in Australia starts at around the $300 mark and can cost up to $2400 or more, depending on how much difficulty is involved in getting the data off the hard drive. keep in mind when you're considering your backup strategy that there are no guarantees about recovering data from a drive that has failed, sometimes they just can't get anything back from the drive. Just about everyone has important stuff stored on their computers. These can include photos, general Microsoft Office documents, music, bookkeeping systems, etc. There is a general rule to follow that will keep your data safe, if you follow this rule your data will survive just about any catastrophe. You need to have 3 copies of your data, one on the computer and two backups. The two backups should be on two different types of media, one of which should be stored off-site. Here's the reason that I've recommended an off site copy of your data. Lets suppose that you've been really good and doing backups regularly onto an external hard drive. Now what happens if there's a fire and everything is destroyed? Or, if a thief breaks in and steals all of your computer equipment? If you have a backup off-site you have no need to worry. I recommend Carbonite for your off-site backup, because once it's configured it's simple, automated and needs very little monitoring. While I have said that your backup needs to be on two different types of media, it is also acceptable to have your backups on two portable hard drives. Then keep one at a family members home or a friends place, it will give you an excuse to go and visit them on a regular basis so that you can swap the hard drives over. With that said, you need to copy your data onto the portable drive before you go and swap it over. Otherwise you've wasted your time and money. Although the friend / relative will probably love to see you. To manage the backups you can use a number of methods, here are a list of those that will cost you money:- 1. Use a utility like Acronis True Image Home to automate the backup plus there is also an option to backup to their online vault. 2. Carbonite as mentioned above. 3. Google backup software for a huge list of utilities There are also free utilities for those who are a little more cost conscious:- 1. EASEus To-Do-Backup 2. Windows backup (it is included with most versions of Windows) 3. Google backup software free for another huge list Remember, just like in Real Estate there are three important things to protect the things on your computer that you don't want to lose, BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!

About ASUS Laptops and the NX90 Model

ASUS is a brand name that's taken from the last four letters of Pegasus, the famous winged horse in Greek mythology. This creature is said to be the symbol for inspiration for art and education - something that the people from ASUSTek Computers would like to impart in their products. It looks like they have succeeded so far, especially when speaking of ASUS laptops. Among all their products, their notebook PCs are the most applauded even by some of the world's achievers in extraordinary missions. Sergei Avdeyev, the cosmonaut who once held the record for cumulative time spent in space, has attested to the dependability of these ASUS products even in the grueling conditions in outer space. He's mentioned that he was able to use the ASUS notebook without any problem even if he's left it on all day - proving the excellent heat dissipation capacity of the PC. Captain Wang Yongfeng, the head of the Chinese mountaineering team that made it to the 8,848.43 meter-high Qomolangma Peak, has also claimed the excellent performance of ASUS laptops. The ASUS U5, in particular, was able to function even upon reaching the world's highest peak. If ASUS has proven its name in performance, it seems to have taken its excellence to include more aesthetics. Its NX90 stands out among the latest notebooks available. It appears to have been produced for those who want the best things in life. It's like a complete multimedia center in a sleek, portable package. Armed with second generation (2011) Intel Core i7 processor, the NX90 provides smooth, clear and detailed visuals on a fully HD widescreen 18.4-inch display that's LED-backlit. The stunning images are also attributed to its NVIDIA GeForce technology. Unparalleled visuals must have excellent audio, of course. And the audio produced by NX90 is its other element that makes it one of the hottest goods in the market. Its sound technology is powered by ASUS SonicMaster and the ICEpower of no less than Bang & Olufsen. B&O's David Lewis, who has been given the title Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, lends his talent to this product. With the NX90 he's given a whole new meaning to notebook design. Its excellent sound is delivered by the large chambers built on each side of the wide screen. It actually looks like a mini flat screen TV. This notebook has dual touch pads, one on either side of the keyboard for ergonomic purposes. All these are elegantly packaged in a slim gadget in polished aluminum. The NX90 is just one of ASUS's latest creations. For those who are planning to buy ASUS laptops and have some other notebook features in mind, the brand's other top performers like the Zenbook are worth a try.

Source Technologies Printers And Toner

Are you finding yourself having to replace your old printer more often than you should have to? People think buying the cheapest products is the way to go since they end up becoming junk in a short times length. The fact of the matter is that printers are less likely to last over the years when randomly selecting extremely inexpensive off name brand items. Of a long list of trustworthy brands is Source Technologies. Providing for quite some time now printers and toner with a history of lasting and working the way you expect. Making a good purchase now will only benefit you in the future. A large group of their printers are referred to as MICR, displaying both speed and security. How fast do you need the pages to print and how frequently? Speed can be found in printers providing as little as a 6.5 second gap between your request and the finished product. For large quantities one can find there 50 page owner's manual ready in under a minute with the best MICR printers. Size of MICR printers can vary pretty greatly. Some machines can weigh up to 100 pounds, which are typically placed in office settings. While others can weigh out to approximately 25 pounds per printer. Since these printers, big and small, are popular it is always a good idea to secure them. Have a full combination lock and password to prevent theft. Aside from weight and speed, MICR models are also designed to correct printer jams and keep a head count of all copies produced. Some people prefer Source Tech's thermal printers. Mid-range and mobile thermal printers are a couple of models they provide. Mid-range thermal printers will yield in clear, positive results. These printers have unique features such as the ability to choose and scale over fifty fonts. Thermal mobile printers are helpful to people seeking an option to make lugging their printer from place to place possible. Small sizes and light weights allow for a quick move. Printers are coated in materials to prevent things from clinging to them during moves, such as water and dust particles. Consider having your mobile thermal printer equipped with its own Bluetooth system. Even find portable printers that weigh less than two pounds total! Toner is simply one of those things you can include in the expense of owning and maintaining your printer, regardless of the model you choose. Luckily there are companies striving to keep prices low for consumers, but even still most people end up buying the first thing that they see. Convenience can mean everything to people and OEM toner products provide just that. Source Tech, being a brand name, gets included in the mix and will be seen on shelves for many years to come. If you plan ahead, or can spare a days wait, you can shift your loyalty to compatible toners and reap from their attempt to keep Source Tech toner inexpensive through the use of recycled cartridges. Both toner options display convenience for Source Tech printers it all just depends on the rate you need your refill after your last toner approaches its end.

How To Wisely Buy A New Computer

We are now into 2012, and your old computer just quit. Do you fix it or buy a new computer? If the computer is 5 years old or older, then probably buying a new computer is the better strategy. Many computers manufactured 5 to 9 years ago have hardware components that fail mandating replacement of the computer. Please read on to understand how to buy the best computer for your needs. The first decisions to make in buying a new computer are very basic. By answering these questions you determine your basic purchase strategy: 1. Please ask yourself "How much can I spend?" The computer prices range from $200 to $400, $450 to $800, and $900 and up. 2. Next determine the computer type (or style) that works best for you. The types of computers are desktop, laptop, and tablet. These types of computers differ in their size, portability, and functionality. Desktop computers are the least portable. They are good for using multiple displays and heavy workloads. Laptops vary in size and portability. The big ones have 17-inch display making them luggable for occasional trips. Big laptops have most of the capabilities of a desktop but the computing horsepower is lower than a desktop in order to conserve laptop battery power. Similarly, the display is smaller with lower resolution than displays used with desktop computers. Tablet computers are the most portable. They can do a lot, but with a much smaller display. The tablets are a powerful, portable information tool that is one step above a smartphone. 3. Finally, the timeless question is: Do I buy an Apple or another computer? The other computer main selections are Windows 7 operating system or Android operating system computers. There are also Linux computers. Linux is free General Public License software operating system. Linux computers are equivalent for everyday users to Windows and Apple computers. The single difference between Linux and Windows is that with a Linux computer you only pay for the computer hardware which is a huge savings over Apple and Windows computers. The market for Apple computers is tightly controlled. This means that Apple computers work very well with few problems. They are seldom attacked by malicious software. Everything an enthusiastic Apple owner says about their Apple is true. They are also beautiful looking computers. The down side is that they are expensive. When an Apple does malfunction, you have a big problem. If the Apple computer is under warranty, then you schedule a visit to the Apple store and wait in line to get it fixed. Also, you pay a lot for the repair. In contrast Windows 7 computers are like the Wild West. In the Wild West anything can and does happen. There are many competing hardware and software products for Windows 7 computers. Windows 7 computers are the most malware, spyware, and virus attacked computers. Because there are more Windows computers sold than any other computers, Windows computers are the biggest target to attack. Apple computers also get viruses, but much less often than Windows computers. Windows computers can be cheap computers but they are not cheaper than Linux computers. 4. The final question is: What computer manufacturer do you like? Each manufacturer has its approach to selling computers. My preference is manufacturers that do not add fancy frills beyond the basics that come with Windows or the computer operating system. Most of the frills try to sell you something, provide functions that a redundant with the operating system, they occupy screen space getting in the way of what you are doing, and they overload and slow down the computer. For example, HP computers are like Big MACs, they taste great but come with a lot of software fat. Lenovo computers are like a bank vault. They secure your data but are miserable to fix because of the security. It seems that all computers come with an annoying "dock" or application launcher. It takes up a lot of screen space and really adds little beyond what Windows itself provides. It is always cheaper to purchase a package than to build a custom computer. Purchasing custom computer parts is always more expensive than buying a packaged system from a manufacturer because the manufacturers purchase computer components in such high volume. Once your basic strategy is determined, then it is time to find a computer. The approach here is to use the Internet to perform the initial shopping and then go to the store to make the final decision and purchase. Please go to the web site of a computer retailer near you such as Best Buy or Staples. Search their site based on the type (or style) of computer that works best for you. The site should produce a list of computers from which to choose. Sort them by "Best Selling" and check the "Customer Reviews". Please determine how the price compares to your budget. Most retail store sites permit comparing the features of three computers side by side. Carefully select three computers for comparison. This approach was used to compare from one retailer three desktop computers moderately priced. They ranged from $429.99 to $699.99. The $429.99 computer used a 3.3 GHz Intel i3 CPU chip, had 6 GB RAM, and a 1 TB disk drive. The 549.99 computer used an AMD 2.4 GHz CPU chip, had 8 GB RAM, and had a slower 5,400 rpm 1.5 TB drive. The $699.99 computer used an Intel 3.0GHz i5 CPU chip, had 6 GB RAM and a 7,200 rpm 1 TB drive. The differences between these systems are not likely to make the most expensive system perform that noticeably better to a user than the least expensive system. As long as the hardware features are generally in the same range the performance seems to be the same for each computer. All systems used the latest DDR3 RAM. The computer with 8 GB of RAM may perform better than those computers with 6 GB of RAM. One thing is certain; all these computers would be decidedly faster than a Windows XP system with 2 GB of RAM. While special performance test programs can measure the performance difference between a 2.4 GHz AMD CPU chip computer and a 3.3 GHz Intel i5 CPU chip computer, people barely notice the difference. What people do notice is that AMD chip computers usually are cheaper by $100 or more than Intel CPU chip computers. The Windows Performance Index is a measure of the combined performance of all the components of a Windows Vista or a Windows 7 computer. The Windows Performance Index is a single number that varies between 1 and 7.9. Low end systems have Windows Performance Index numbers in the 3.4 to 4.5 range. A computer with a 3.4 score perform the same as a computer with a 4.5 score to a human. To see a performance difference the Windows Performance Index would need to go from a 4.5 to a 7.5. The Windows Performance Index is not mentioned in any advertising to my knowledge. It is found on Windows 7 computers by opening START, clicking the right mouse button on the COMPUTER menu selection and then selecting PROPERTIES from the drop down menu that appears. To see Windows Performance Index you would need to have a store sales person fire up the computer and help you view it. Apple computers usually have hardware operates at slower speeds and has smaller capacities than Windows computers. The Apple computers perform as well as or better than their Windows competitors because they use a different and tightly controlled operating system. The software interaction with the hardware makes up for the slower Apple hardware. The final comparison area is in the display. Monitors today use Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlighting. The LEDs use little power and should last seemingly forever. Monitor physical size contributes to visibility. A character on a 14-inch monitor is smaller than the same character on a 24-inch monitor. The bigger monitor images are more easily viewed. Monitors resolution is expressed in horizontal by vertical dots or pixels. Typically they are something like 1600 by 900 dots. Monitors with a larger number of dots of vertical resolution have a better display. Often monitors will be advertised as 1080p. The 1080p resolution is 1080 dots of vertical resolution with each line refreshed on each scan cycle. On a 1600 by 1200 monitor you can see a full 8.5 by 11 inch page when it is viewed at full size or 100% zoom. Monitors with 900 dots vertical resolution often cut off the bottom of the page when it is viewed at full size. The final bit of wisdom to consider in purchasing a new computer is not to purchase the most expensive computer. Here is why. A client asked me to get him a computer. At the Dell web site I configured a computer with what seemed to be modest features. This computer cost $3,000. At Costco they offered a computer package that had somewhat lower performance features for under $1,000. If the client purchased a new $1,000 computer every year for three years, at the end of three years he would have better computer than if he purchased the $3,000 Dell computer. Only purchase the most expensive computer if you must absolutely have the features and performance it provides. Otherwise stay with more moderately priced computers and purchase them more often. Buying two $400 computers is better than going for a single $800 computer in the long run. There is not the "best computer" to buy. But using the strategy presented here anyone can find a great computer for themselves. Pete the Nerd "Your Friend on a Technically Challenged Planet" P D Moulton

Decision Support System

DSS Concepts Broadly defined, a decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based information system that combines models and data in an attempt to solve semistructured and some unstructured problems with extensive user involvement. But the term decision support system (DSS), like the terms MIS and MSS, means different things to different people. DSSs can be viewed as an approach or a philosophy rather than a precise methodology. However, a DSS does have certain recognized characteristics, which we will present later. First, let us look at a classical case of a successfully implemented DSS, which occurred long ago, yet the scenario is typical. The case demonstrates some of the major characteristics of a DSS. The risk analysis performed first was based on the decision maker's initial definition of the situation, using a management science approach. Then, the executive vice president, using his experience, judgement, and intuition, felt that the model should be modified. The initial model, although mathematically correct, was incomplete. With a regular simulation system, a modification of the computer program would have taken a long time, but the DSS provided a very quick analysis. Many companies are turning to DSSs to improve decision making. Reasons cited by managers for the increasing use of DSSs include the following: New and accurate information was needed; information was needed fast; and tracking the company's numerous business operations was increasingly difficult. Or, the company was operating in an unstable economy; it faced increasing foreign and domestic competition; the company's existing computer system did not properly support the objectives of increasing efficiency, profitability, and entry into profitable markets. Other reasons include: the IS department was unable to address the diversity of the company's needs or management's ad-hoc inquiries, and business analysis functions were not inherent within the existing system. In many organizations that have adopted a DSS, the conventional information systems, which were built for the purpose of supporting transaction processing, were not sufficient to support several of the company's critical response activities, especially those that require last and/or complex decision making. A DSS, on the other hand, can do just that. Another reason for the development of DSS is the end-user computing movement. With the exception of large-scale DSSs, end users can build systems themselves, using DSS development tools such as Excel. Group Decision Support System Decision making is frequently a shared process. For example, meetings among groups of managers from different areas are an essential element for reaching consensus. The group may be involved in making a decision or in a decision-related task, like creating a short list of acceptable alternatives or deciding on criteria for accepting an alternative. When a decision-making group is supported electronically, the support is referred to as group decision support. Two types of groups are considered: a one-room group whose members are in one place (e.g., a meeting room), and a virtual group, whose members are in different location. A group decision support system (GDSS) is an interactive computer-based system that facilitates the solution of semistructured and unstructured problems when made by a group of decision makers. The objective of a GDSS is to support the process of arriving at a decision. The first generation of GDSSs was designed to support face-to-face meetings in what is called decision room. Some Applications of GDSSs An increasing number of companies are useng GDSSs, especially when virtual groups are involved. One example is the Internal Revenue Service, which used a one-room GDSS to implement its quality-improvement programs based on the participation of a number of its quality teams. The GDSS was helpful in identifying problems, generating and evaluating ideas, and developing and implementing solutions. Another example is the European automobile industry, which used a one-room GDSS to examine the competitive automotive business environment and make ten-year forecasts, needed for strategic planning.

The Ultimate Face-Off: iOS Vs Android

At first, we were crazy for Windows-based mobile devices, and then came Apple's iOS following the Android range of OS'. I have always been a Windows fan boy after which I joined the Apple club. Lately, I have decided to switch over to the ubiquitous Android side of things. Owing to the prominence of Android and iOS it's no surprise that the top tablet PCs sport the OS'. This post will cover each operating system's benefits and some flaws to buy a tablet PC online. Stability After working on both systems, I find both pretty stable to use. The best tablet PC didn't stall or freeze up on me, like previous Windows renditions. While it might seem that the apps are closed in Android, fact is they lay hidden and avoid consuming resources. iOS should follow suit, right? Not quite! Because whenever the apps are minimized or exited, the system prompts to tap the Home toggle twice to close the apps. On the whole, iOS and Android are quite steady OS'. But it also based on the kind of apps installed on the top tablet PC s. Restricted Choice I'm sure may would agree, freedom in customization is not associated with Apple. They have limited the choices to customize the device. This transforms into developers being denied function n calls on just about every feature. For instance, you're helpless if you need a shortcut to toggle between on and off for the Bluetooth. iOS fails to allow developers entry to additional features as well. Android on the other hand resembles pure flexibility in this regard. You have a range of snazzy apps at your disposal on the best tablet PC. For instance, there's an app to set your profile to silent at a specific time or program it to ring as a wakeup call. Not forgetting that every Android will sport a different home screen. Compare this to iOS where every screen pretty much looks the same. App Integration With iOS, every app is secluded carrying out just their own features. They are barred from corresponding with each other. The iOS 5 will feature Twitter additions but that's as good as it gets. Android is all about integration. For instance, once you've clicked a photo, you're given an option to share it. In case Facebook or Twitter is set up, the Share feature will allow dispersing snaps via the available social mediums. Hope you come to a conclusion to buy a tablet PC online.

How Online Computer Support Works

Most people are under the impression that you have to take your PC to a repair shop for every little problem. While this can work for some people, it is better to get help that requires no wait, no trip, and immediate relief. This can be done through online computer support. Online computer support is a relatively new concept in the computer repair era, both in premise and function. By using software, phone or live chat options, PC repair consultants can help or solve your computer problems without even having to stop by your home or business. So, if you want to save time and money, here is how you get started with online computer support. Your Problem Your computer is acting strange, it's glitchy and for some reason it wants you to buy products for unknown reasons; it happens. From here you need to decide how you want to contact your online computer support agent. You can do this by calling the computer support site or by using the computer support site's chat room. When you are connected, your consultant will want to know these following things: * What software system your computer is running * What you would describe as the problem * What you have done so far * If you would like to be helped over the phone or through your computer directly If you would like the consultant to do the work, they may direct you to install software which enables the consultant to work on your PC from their computer. This gives them free reign to understand what your problem is. Diagnosis and Fee Evaluation After your computer has been checked out, the consultant will tell you the problem, how it can be fixed and what it will cost. As opposed to an hourly wage, consultants work for one flat cost. Part of this assessment will include any implications it may mean on your computer. In some cases, it is possible that your computer has picked up unwanted software and viruses, some of them more destructive than others. With stubborn viruses, this may mean clearing and resetting your computer to the original factory settings. You have the option to have all your files backed up in the event that deletion is the only possible remedy. If the consultant has to make a big decision, you will be told what they want to do, how it affects your computer and what they can do to keep the fix convenient to you. It is important that you ask questions if you don't clearly understand any of the details. The Job Online computer support agents will begin their work. They will ask the easiest way to contact you, so you can do other things while they work. Depending on the problem, it can take as little as ten minutes or several hours. Since most problems are routine, a good estimate can be arranged. When the job is complete, you should be able to run your computer with the problem fixed. Your consultant will explain what to do if for some reason a problem reoccurs.
